If I see someone laying down or looks like they're asleep, how do I decide whether or not to stop and check on them?
If you’re walking by someone and don’t know whether to stop, stand a few yards away from the person where you can see if their chest is rising and falling. If you can see this from where you are, count to yourself (ex. “1 mississippi, 2 mississippi, ...” and confirm they’re breathing at least 1 breath every six seconds. If you can’t tell or aren’t sure, you can move closer to see their chest better. If you still aren’t sure, you can ask the person if they’re alright and introduce yourself, and begin the STIM (Speak, Touch, Intense touch, Monitor breathing) steps to confirm if they’re overdosing.
